New Mexico Lobo men’s basketball team witnessed a significant development as senior guard Jamal Mashburn Jr. announced his entry into the transfer portal on Monday afternoon.

Mashburn Jr. is set to graduate this spring, making him eligible to transfer as a graduate student for an additional year. His journey with the UNM began during his sophomore year when he followed head coach Richard Pitino from Minnesota to New Mexico.

Throughout the season, Mashburn Jr. showcased his prowess on the court, averaging 14.1 points and 2.2 rebounds. His exceptional performance earned him a spot in New Mexico’s top-10 all-time scoring list with 1,629 points. Additionally, he led the Mountain West Conference in scoring last season, solidifying his impact on the team.

Teaming up with Jaelen House, Mashburn Jr. played a pivotal role in rejuvenating the Lobo men’s basketball program and garnering support from the fanbase. Their collective efforts culminated in securing the Mountain West Conference Championship and a spot in the NCAA tournament as the No. 11 seed in their final year.

However, the Lobos’ journey came to an end with a disappointing 77-56 loss to the Clemson Tigers in the NCAA tournament.

Mashburn Jr.’s decision to enter the transfer portal was not isolated, as Sebastian Forsling also followed suit on the same day.

The departure of Mashburn Jr. and Forsling marks a significant change for the New Mexico Lobo men’s basketball team. Their contributions and dedication to the program will be remembered as the team navigates the transition period.
