Rangers now have a serious opportunity to take advantage of the January transfer window and sign Scott McKenna, defender for Nottingham Forest.

In January, we hope to see Philippe Clement bolster his Rangers defence.

While Connor Goldson is still a valuable member of the Rangers defence, it has been difficult to find a partner for him.

Leon Balogun isn’t a long-term solution, John Souttar isn’t particularly dependable due to his injury history, and Ben Davies hasn’t made an adequate impression.

It’s time for the Rangers to sign a new defender, and Clement should be interested in the news that broke today.

Nottingham Forest ready to axe Scott McKenna and Rangers should be interested.

Scotland defender Scott McKenna is set to be fired by Nottingham Forest in January, according to a report published earlier today by TEAMtalk.

Scott McKenna dealt Scotland injury blow as Nottingham Forest defender faces race against time for Cyprus and Spain - Daily RecordIt has been more than three years since the 27-year-old moved from Aberdeen for £6 million, and his contract expires in the summer. Forest appears to want to sell before he leaves for nothing.

The Telegraph also reports that due to a disagreement over his contract, McKenna is training separately from the Forest first team.

Owner Evangelos Marinakis is understood to have a ‘fractious relationship’ with McKenna’s agent and the writing appears to be on the wall.

This is a golden chance for Rangers and one that we would urge the club to take in January.

Look at Rangers’ strategy from last January; both Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin were signed in relative bargain deals because their contracts had just six months left to run.

It was a similar story with Jose Cifuentes over the summer and McKenna is now in the same boat with Rangers potentially able to add real value without breaking the bank.

McKenna ticks the boxes for Rangers in a number of ways, starting with how his eligibility as a homegrown player.

That is vital for European competitions and McKenna already knows the Scottish game well from his time at Aberdeen.

McKenna is of a good age at 27, bringing plenty of experience from Scotland and the Premier League without being – for lack of a better phrase – past it.

The Scot is also a natural left-footer, providing the balance Rangers have been seeking alongside Goldson.

Davies was supposed to be that player following Calvin Bassey’s exit but McKenna could be the man for Clement.

Wages could be a stumbling block but if McKenna has any interest in a January move to Ibrox, then we would implore Rangers to make it happen and solidify Clement’s defence once and for all.
