I am worried: Coach Joseph Makhanya expresses concern while Vela Khumalo praises the young players of Kaizer Chiefs.

Hhay'ngeke Makhanya, these tricks are not ice breakers

After Amakhosi’s victory in the Soweto Derby, coaches discussed their teams’ contrasting perspectives. Chiefs emerged triumphant with a 2-0 win over Pirates at Tsakane Stadium on Sunday, March 24. The youthful Glamour Boys drew confidence from their victory, but the Buccaneers, having lost their previous three matches, were left concerned.

Uncensored comments from Pirates’ coaches Vela Khumalo and Joseph Makhanya were shared by GOAL. Makhanya expressed disappointment over the team’s performance, particularly highlighting errors that marred their game. According to him, Pirates’ performance took a downturn after Chiefs’ Xolani Cossa scored the first goal from a free kick.

During a post-match interview on SuperSport, Makhanya commented, “I felt it was a balanced game, so it needed somebody to take the opportunity. Unfortunately, it was us who had to concede (first) via a free-kick. I felt like maybe the keeper could have dealt better with the free-kick because it was coming from a distance, maybe position himself better.”

He further added, “After we conceded, we started to lose some momentum because we were beginning to gain some momentum in our attempts to score a goal, so as soon as we gave up the free kick, we started to lose it.”

The defeat seemed to weigh heavily on the Pirates’ camp, with the team struggling to regain their rhythm after conceding the goal. Makhanya’s observations pointed to a missed opportunity and a loss of momentum that ultimately affected the team’s performance.

In contrast, Chiefs’ victory not only boosted their confidence but also highlighted their ability to capitalize on opportunities, as demonstrated by Cossa’s goal. The Soweto Derby once again proved to be a pivotal moment in the season, shaping the narrative for both teams as they continue their campaigns.
