Carlton Palmer, who has lived in Sheffield since he played for Sheffield Wednesday in the 1990s, has announced his intention to leave the city.

“Being away in the great weather has made me realise it’s time to move on,” he posted on social media.

“We’re relocating to Portugal. I adore the United Kingdom. My favourite season is Christmas, but everything is gloomy and depressing afterward. I’m leaving.

The legendary Brian Deane of Sheffield United responded to Carlton’s remarks with encouragement.

The former Blades commented: “Great decision Carlton, really happy for you, I think there are a lot of people from our era thinking the same.”

He expressed that seeing someone with the guts to do it was encouraging.

Numerous more fans and well-wishers showed their support for him on the internet.

“A good choice, other than family and Wednesday there’s nothing much here for me,” an Owls supporter said to him.

When Carlton first arrived in Sheffield in 1989, the Owls were competing in the premier league, and he signed a contract for a then-astronomical £750,000. He was a midfielder on one of the best teams the club has had since the 1930s.

He led the team against Arsenal in the 1993 FA Cup Final, but regrettably, he was suspended for the 1991 League Cup Final, which they lost to Manchester United.

He left Wednesday in 1994, but he and a few other players from that era continued to live in Sheffield.
