Updated: Boston Bruins confirms deal for forward through conditional draft pick

Bruins unveil reimagined uniform logo to celebrate 100th season

The Minnesota Wild announced on Friday that they had dealt forward Pat Maroon to the Boston Bruins for a conditional sixth-round draft pick and forward Luke Toporowski, one day after they had transferred Brandon Duhaime to the Colorado Avalanche for a draft pick. AHL Iowa will be receiving Toporowski’s assignment. The choice is contingent on Maroon playing a single postseason game for the Wild.

Maroon, who is on his way to his seventh NHL team in 13 seasons, brings invaluable experience in adapting to new environments, a quality that should reassure the Bruins. He’s known for his contribution beyond statistics like goals, points, or minutes played, embodying a team-first culture. Despite undergoing back surgery in early February and starting light skating recently, he’s expected to make his debut for Boston by the end of this month.

With an impressive track record of 150 playoff appearances and three Stanley Cup victories, Maroon’s presence adds a seasoned edge to any team. In the current season, he has tallied four goals and 16 points in 49 games, while his career regular-season stats include 121 goals and 304 points over 778 games. Despite his efforts, the Wild are facing the prospect of missing the playoffs for only the second time in the last 12 years, currently sitting in sixth place in the Central Division with 66 points in 63 games.

Boston perspective

Maroon’s arrival provides crucial depth for the Bruins’ bottom-six lineup, particularly on the left side. Presently, Danton Heinen occupies the second left-wing spot, while James van Riemsdyk holds the third-line position. Upon his return from back surgery, Maroon is expected to contend for the fourth left-wing slot alongside Jakub Lauko.

While Maroon may not match Lauko’s speed, his extensive playoff experience and physical presence add a different dimension to the team. His inclusion is likely to enhance team chemistry and contribute positively to the Bruins’ lineup.

Shattenkirk approves of acquistion

Kevin Shattenkirk holds a high regard for Pat Maroon, with whom he shared the victory of the Stanley Cup during the 2019-20 season with the Tampa Bay Lightning. During that season, Maroon contributed six goals and 14 assists across 64 regular-season games, along with six points in 25 playoff games.

Shattenkirk describes Maroon as a valuable asset both on and off the ice, emphasizing his positive influence in the locker room. Maroon is praised for his strong leadership qualities, capable of providing both serious guidance and light-hearted moments as needed. Shattenkirk highlights Maroon’s extensive experience and ability to perform effectively, particularly during crucial playoff moments.
