Sinclair Armstrong stuns Championship leaders Leicester with decisive QPR goal

Ireland international Sinclair Armstrong scored the decisive goal for QPR with his first touch after coming on.

QPR’s surprising 2-1 victory over Leicester at the King Power Stadium has narrowed Leicester’s lead at the top of the Championship to just three points with 11 games remaining. The relegation-threatened QPR team claimed the win with goals from Ilias Chair and substitute Sinclair Armstrong, who scored immediately after coming on as a substitute.

Despite a quick response from Leicester’s Ben Nelson, who scored shortly after Armstrong’s goal, Leicester could not find an equalizer, leading to their third consecutive league defeat. This result has allowed second-placed Ipswich Town to close the gap on Leicester.

While the win was significant for QPR, it only lifted them one place in the table, and they are still outside the relegation zone based on goal difference.

Leicester City 1-2 Queens Park Rangers: Championship leaders suffer third consecutive defeat - BBC Sport

Leicester had hoped to capitalize on Leeds’ draw with Huddersfield earlier in the day, but their plans were disrupted when midfielder Dennis Praet was forced off injured after just 15 minutes, with Yunus Akgun replacing him.

Enzo Maresca’s team controlled possession, with Harry Winks coming close to scoring first with a curling shot from 20 yards that narrowly missed the far post. QPR’s Kenneth Paal then prevented Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from scoring for Leicester by clearing Yunus’ cross for a corner.

Despite Leicester’s pressure, QPR took the lead in the 38th minute. Chris Willock set up Lyndon Dykes with a cross from the right, and Chair managed to squeeze the ball just inside the post.

Armstrong, an Ireland international, substituted in the 57th minute for QPR and quickly made an impact. Jimmy Dunne’s header found Sam Field, who passed to Armstrong. He scored with a powerful drive, giving Marti Cifuentes’ team a two-goal lead.

Leicester managed to pull one back three minutes later. Stephy Mavididi’s free-kick was pushed out by QPR’s Asmir Begovic, but Nelson followed up to score his first senior goal.

Despite efforts from Abdul Fatawu, whose curling shot went just over the bar, and claims for a late penalty, Leicester could not break down QPR’s defense and force an equalizer.

The match was reminiscent of Leicester’s previous home game against Middlesbrough, where they also fell two goals behind and failed to recover. However, Leicester’s late penalty claim was denied, and the match ended in a 2-1 victory for QPR.
