Geordie Payne, a Tasmanian kid, was the top pick in the just conducted 2024 AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft. North Melbourne selected the 19-year-old with their first pick in the draft.

Payne, who played for the Tasmania Devils in the Coates Talent League before being drafted, was one of the top prospects entering the draft. In Round 8, he was given the Coates Talent League Player of the Week for his remarkable performance.

The Kangaroos, who have gone winless this season, will hope that adding the teenager to their ranks would provide the spark needed to change the tide on an already disappointing season.North Melbourne was not the only team that selected a good prospect in the 2024 AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft. With the second overall pick, the Richmond Tigers selected Jacob Blight of the Peel Thunders, while the West Coast Eagles selected Collingwood VFL forward Jack Hutchinson.

Brynn Teakle is the only former AFL-listed player picked in the draft. The former Port Adelaide ruckman was also chosen by North Melbourne with the 15th pick in the second round of the draft.
