The Detroit Lions are a team on the rise in 2024, but with the NFL trade deadline approaching, they still have opportunities to strengthen their roster. Here are two of the best trades the Lions could make to boost their playoff chances and solidify themselves as contenders.
1. Trade for a Veteran Edge Rusher
The Lions’ defense has improved under coordinator Aaron Glenn, but an extra edge rusher could take them to the next level. Detroit could target someone like Danielle Hunter from the Minnesota Vikings. Hunter is a proven pass-rushing force with the ability to apply constant pressure, which would pair well with Aidan Hutchinson. Adding Hunter would not only improve the pass rush but also allow Detroit to rotate their front four more effectively, keeping everyone fresh for the critical moments late in the season. Given Minnesota’s potential willingness to move on from high contracts in a rebuilding phase, this could be an opportunity for the Lions to strike without overpaying.
2. Trade for a Proven Cornerback
While the Lions’ secondary has been solid, they could use a veteran corner to shore up the back end, especially in the slot. Detroit could look at acquiring Jaylon Johnson from the Chicago Bears, a talented corner in his prime. Johnson’s ability to cover top receivers would allow the Lions to move players around, creating more depth and flexibility in coverage. With the NFC North still up for grabs, making a move for Johnson could be a game-changer, as he’d bring both coverage skill and leadership. The Bears might consider parting ways with Johnson if the compensation is right, especially if they are focused on long-term rebuilding.
These two trades would address key needs without sacrificing the future, positioning the Lions as serious playoff threats with a well-rounded roster.
