The Chicago Cubs are considered to be the team where Gold Glove third baseman might land.

Washington Nationals news & notes: Jeimer Candelario at third base + more… - Federal BaseballAn MLB insider sees the Chicago Cubs among the likely landing spots for a Gold Glove third baseman.

Before the 2024 MLB season begins, the Chicago Cubs require a legitimate third baseman. Jeimer Candelario is currently a free agent, thus the Cubs need to find a replacement for him.

It seems that Chicago is not happy with Nick Madrigal, Patrick Wisdom, or Christopher Morel starting at third base going into the upcoming season. After an outstanding 2023 season, the latter may potentially be traded.

Gold Glover Matt Chapman seems like a perfect fit for the Cubs, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. The top free agent option available is the former third baseman for the Toronto Blue Jays. He has a reliable hitter at the plate in addition to being a superb fielder.

“The Cubs addressed their third-base need at last summer’s Trade Deadline with the acquisition of Candelario, but he is now a free agent,” says Feinsand. “Chicago has some internal options at the position (Nick Madrigal, Christopher Morel, Patrick Wisdom), but Chapman would represent an upgrade over their choices.”

The Cubs seem to be destined for the National League Central, but they have bigger goals in mind than just winning their division.

Chicago needs to solve their hot corner position if they want to contend well into October. Chapman is seen to be a major improvement above what they implemented for the most of 2023.

Chapman won’t come cheap, though. He is the prize asset of the third base free agent class and one of the most sought-after free agents. He’ll be targeted by any team searching for assistance at the hot corner.

The Cubs will have to pay for him if they want him.
