The Rabbitohs have begun to make plans for the future after South Sydney signed a long-term contract extension with Damien Cook’s long-term replacement.

Local junior Peter Mamouzelos has signed a new three-year contract that will keep him at South Sydney until the conclusion of the 2027 season, solidifying the Rabbitohs’ long-term replacement for Damien Cook.

Long regarded as Cook’s heir apparent, the 23-year-old will have to wait his turn because the representative rake is under contract through the end of 2025.

Having participated in seven NRL games thus far, Mamouzelos may see more playing time over the course of the next two seasons if the Rabbitohs choose to rest Cook after halftime.

A junior at South Sydney’s Maroubra Lions club, Mamouzelos remarked, “I’m really excited to be extending my time with this club.”

“I informed my management that I had no intention of going elsewhere. I’ve always loved this club, I’ve grown up here in South Sydney, and it’s always been my team.

“I was thrilled when he told me we were staying here when I spoke with him.

Playing for our esteemed members and supporters every week is a privilege, as they are the best in the competition.

“I am incredibly grateful to my family for all of their sacrifices that have allowed me to reach this point in my life.

“I’d like to express my gratitude to JD (Jason Demetriou), Ello (Mark Ellison), and all the coaches for having faith in me.

“Thank you to all of the players for their assistance in helping me refine my game. We have the best playing squad in the competition, in my opinion, and I’m confident we can win it.

“I’m just so happy that I resigned, and I can’t wait for the football season to begin in a few weeks.”

Mark Ellison, the head of football, has said that Mamouzelos will play more first grade in the upcoming years. On grand final day, the youthful dummy-half was instrumental in South Sydney’s NRL State Championship victory.

He remarked, “Pete is a junior from South Sydney who has worked hard to earn the opportunity to play more first grade in the upcoming seasons.”

He is the kind of player that works hard on his game and picks up knowledge about the dummy-half role from his teammates and coaches. He is enjoying the chance to work with one of our game’s greatest hookers, Damien Cook, as well as other seasoned players like Siliva Havili.

“As he has advanced through the grades over the past few years, we have watched him improve consistently. In the upcoming seasons, he is expected to play a bigger role in first grade.”
