One prospect from the 2024 class is reportedly receiving a $4 million commitment from the Chicago Cubs.
On Monday, the opening day of the 2024 signing period, the Chicago Cubs reached agreements with 13 prospects from abroad.
The Chicago Sun-Times, Baseball America, and MLB Pipeline all published reports on the agreements. No deals have been formally disclosed by the Cubs.
Nine of the Cubs’ deals are with Dominican Republic players, one of which is with Fernando Cruz, whose Cubs deal was previously revealed on Monday.
The 17-year-old shortstop, who is a part of MLB’s Trainer Partnership Programme and was ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 4 foreign prospect heading into Monday, was quite the coup for the Cubs to acquire.
Dansby Swanson, who signed a seven-year, $177 million contract this offseason, locks down the Cubs’ shortstop spot for the next six years, but most foreign prospects are long-term plays. These players will begin their professional careers in the Dominican Summer League, if not all of them.
Because of his incredibly powerful hands and forearms, Cruz is described by MLB Pipeline as ‘… a hitter capable of spraying the ball to all fields, (he) has enough strength in his swing to enable him to hit the ball to right field as if he were a left-handed batter’.
Cruz is said to have accepted a $4 million contract, a sizeable portion of their $5.512 million international bonus fund. The Cubs have until December 15th to spend any remaining funds.
