Alex Mellor, a back-row player for the Castleford Tigers, suffered a significant knee injury during their pre-season victory yesterday. It appears that he will be out for up to three months.

The Tigers, who emerged victorious from their relegation battle against Wakefield Trinity, were playing for their first championship of 2024 when they faced Keighley Cougars. Mellor was benched after just 13 minutes of play.

In Jake Webster’s “farewell game,” Craig Lingard’s team would go on to easily defeat their League 1 opponents 54-0, but Mellor’s injury would be the topic of the day.

The 29-year-old, who went over 200 career appearances at the end of the previous season, was seen using crutches to get around and was wearing a knee brace following the game at Cougar Park, as first reported by Matt Shaw of Yorkshire Live.

Castleford Tigers ace Alex Mellor delivers brutally honest assessment of 'awful' season; 'We've massively underperformed'

Alex Mellor of the Castleford Tigers will need a lengthy medical leave of absence after being substituted out of the preseason game against the Keighley Cougars.
Tigers head coach Lingard remarked to reporter Shaw following the game, “He’s done the MCL on the other knee before, and he said it feels similar to that.”

“We’ll find out more tomorrow once he has an appointment for a scan. You’re looking at eight to twelve weeks if it’s his MCL.

Ex-Leeds Rhinos star Mellor might play until April 7 in 12 weeks if the prognosis of an MCL injury is accurate, which is dated from yesterday, January 14.

Before then, Cas will play seven Super League games in addition to their two remaining preseason games, which they will play at home against the London Broncos and Huddersfield Giants, respectively.

Prior to Mellor’s anticipated comeback, the Tigers will play a Challenge Cup match in the Jungle against the Wigan Warriors, the defending Super League champions. The Tigers will begin the competition in Round Six, which takes place over the weekend of March 22–24.
